Passports,
valid for at least six months from the entry into China, and entry visas
are required to visit China. Visas may not be required for visitors
from certain countries, and BISOT participants are advised to consult
the nearest Chinese diplomatic mission for details.
To apply for visas, participants should first fill out
and send in the registration form with the appropriate registration
fee. The BISOT Secretariat will then send a formal invitation via airmail
with which the symposium participant can apply for a visa at the Chinese
diplomatic mission indicated in the invitation. This application should
be made preferably at least one month before departure for China.
Currency
and Banking
Foreign currencies may be changed into RMB yuan at the airport,
banks and hotels. The exchange rate for US Dollars is approximately
1 USD for 8.3 RMB yuan.
RMB (Renminbi) is the only currency used in China. Money exchanges by
cash or traveler's checks can be made at the branches of the Bank of
China at Beijing International Airport, hotels and tourist stores.
Banks usually open at 9:00 a.m. and close at 5:00 p.m. everyday of the
week (including Saturdays and Sundays). Currency exchange services are
available for the following foreign currencies: US Dollar, British Pound
Sterling, Euro, Japanese Yen, Australian Dollar, Canadian Dollar, Hong
Kong Dollar, Swiss Franc, Danish Krone, Norwegian Krone, Swedish Krone,
Singapore Dollar, Malaysian Ringgit, and Macao Pataca. Smaller money
exchange outlets may not accept all of these currencies.
Credit cards such as American Express, Diners Club, JCB, Master Card
and Visa may be used for payments at hotels and tourist stores.
When visitors leave China, they can change the remaining amount of RMB
back into foreign cash at the airport prior to their departure from
China. But if they wish to do so, they have to show foreign currency
conversion receipts.
